Single-ply membrane roofing

A modern, lightweight way to waterproof flat and low-pitch roofs — installed with the precision it demands.

What is single-ply roofing?

Single-ply roofing uses one flexible, factory-made membrane sheet to form the waterproof layer of a roof. Sheets are laid over a prepared deck — usually with insulation beneath — and joined with welded or bonded seams to create one continuous covering.

Because the membrane is made under controlled conditions, its thickness and quality are consistent across the whole roof. The finished surface is clean, smooth and uniform, which suits contemporary extensions and commercial buildings alike.

Where it's used

Single-ply systems work well on house extensions, garages, dormers, garden rooms, balconies and terraces, as well as larger commercial and industrial roofs. They can be mechanically fixed, adhered or ballasted depending on the building, the deck and the exposure of the site.

They're also a common waterproofing layer beneath green roofs, where a dependable membrane is essential.

Installation considerations

A single-ply roof is only as good as the detailing. We look carefully at falls and drainage, the condition of the existing deck, insulation and ventilation requirements, and how the membrane meets walls, rooflights, outlets and edges.

Before quoting we'll inspect the roof, explain which system and fixing method suits it, and set out clearly what's included.

Common questions

Can single-ply go over my existing flat roof?

Sometimes. It depends on the condition of the existing covering and deck. We'll inspect it and tell you honestly whether overlaying or stripping back is the right approach.

Is single-ply suitable for a small extension?

Yes. Single-ply membranes are widely used on domestic extensions, garages and dormers as well as large commercial roofs.
