Green roof installation
Sedum and living roofs that look good for years — because the waterproofing beneath them is done right.
What is a green roof?
A green roof is a roof covered with low-growing plants on top of a layered build-up: waterproofing, root protection, drainage, a growing medium and the planting itself. Sedum is the most common choice for domestic roofs as it's hardy and shallow-rooted.
Waterproofing comes first
Once a green roof is planted, the membrane underneath is difficult to reach, so it has to be right first time. We install a suitable waterproofing system — typically single-ply — with root-resistant protection before any planting goes on.
Drainage and structure
A saturated green roof is heavier than a standard roof, so the structure must be able to carry it. We'll talk about loadings, drainage layers, outlets and vegetation-free margins at edges and outlets during the survey.
Biodiversity and maintenance
Planted roofs can provide habitat for insects and pollinators and soften the look of a building. Sedum roofs are low-maintenance but not no-maintenance: an occasional check to clear outlets, remove unwanted growth and, where needed, feed the planting keeps them healthy.
